AUSTIN, Texas – Boost VC’s managing partner and early Coinbase investor, Adam Draper, shared his thoughts on the future of the crypto exchange at CoinDesk’s Consensus 2023 conference. Draper believes that Coinbase will be the “best investment” over the next five years and emphasized the value of long-term investment strategies.
Draper was joined on the panel, “Silicon Valley’s Reckoning,” by Jalak Jobanputra, founder of Future Perfect Ventures, and Lauren Stephanian, partner at Pantera Capital. When asked about the time horizon of a venture capital investment, Draper stated that he is a long-term player who holds most of his investments in crypto. He highlighted the difference between a hedge fund and a VC in terms of the time horizon, with hedge funds focusing mainly on short-term trades.
“If you are a short-term investor, if you are on Wall Street, you think that last year Coinbase was an awful investment,” Draper said. “And I would argue that over the next five years, it’s going to be the best investment.” He acknowledged that emotionally, many people may not want to invest in Coinbase right now, but he believes that it will pay off in the long run.
Draper did reveal that he sold half of his Decentraland (MANA) investment during the 2020-21 bull market peak when the token was trading at over $5. Currently, it is trading at approximately $0.56, according to CoinDesk data.
Despite Coinbase’s shares falling by 57% over the past year, they have risen by 49% this year, according to TradingView.
