Input Output Global (IOG), the team behind the Cardano blockchain network, has revealed a new toolkit for developers to build sidechains on the Cardano network. The toolkit enables developers to create Ethereum virtual machine (EVM)-compatible chains that can have their own consensus algorithm and features.

In a blog post, IOG announced that a proof of concept for the toolkit has already been created. “Using the toolkit, they have constructed an Ethereum virtual machine (EVM)-compatible sidechain public testnet as a proof of concept. Sidechains make Cardano extensible and more scalable without compromising the stability or security of the main chain,” the post stated.

The toolkit comes with a technical specification document that includes an introduction and guide to Cardano sidechains. It aims to empower developers to achieve key tasks such as moving data and assets between the main chain and custom sidechains, and securing sidechain launches and smaller chains. The toolkit also allows developers to experiment, incubate, and research.

IOG believes that the easy development of sidechains is one of the key components that can help spark mass adoption of Cardano. “Sidechains development paves the way for mass adoption of Cardano by enabling much higher throughput without reduction in decentralization or security. Blockchain developers can more easily create custom sidechains. Eventually, IOG hopes to see a family of Cardano sidechains and partner chains emerging,” the post stated.

The new toolkit will be released to the public this month, allowing the community to deploy decentralized applications (DApps), create smart contracts, and transfer tokens between the testing environment chains. “There are plenty of improvements that can be made and there are lots of diverse ways of running a sidechain. However, we hope what we have developed internally at IOG will provide a core set of capabilities and lay firm foundations for building out a set of tools and making further improvements in collaboration with the community,” IOG said.

IOG’s new toolkit is a significant development for the Cardano network, as it allows developers to easily create sidechains that are compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine. This opens up new possibilities for the Cardano network, and could potentially lead to mass adoption of the blockchain. The toolkit will be released to the public this month, and IOG looks forward to working with the community to make further improvements.
